KPMG have kindly offered to pay the fees…

The UK government has recently announced an increase in university tuition fees.

This raised a number of concerns such as the risk that some of the poorer students would be unable to attend university due to not being able to afford the fees.

Numerous student protests ensued but the fee increase proposals were implemented and university fees will rise in 2012 to up to £9,000 per year.

Accountancy firm KPMG recruits in the region of 400 new trainees each year in the UK alone.

They have just announced an innovative new scheme for supporting school leavers that want a career in accountancy and are offering to pay university tuition fees for some of their annual intake.

From this autumn, KPMG will offer a 6 year programme to 75 school leavers which will include 4 years of study at Durham University. During this time KPMG will pay the university fees for the students as well as a salary of up to £20,000 pa.

If all goes well with their exams, at the end of the programme the students will have both a degree and a professional accounting qualification.

Oliver Tant, UK Head of Audit at KPMG, said:  “We are really excited about this scheme which we think is genuinely ground-breaking and innovative.  For us, one of the key things is to ensure fair access to the profession by ensuring the greatest number of young people possible go to university – and also have the potential to train as an accountant.  We need an accountancy profession that is as diverse and as open as it can be.”

I think that this is a great idea by KPMG.

A friend of mine recently mentioned that the kindergarten fees for her 4 year old daughter have just increased significantly. Could we see a move in the future by one of the accounting firms to sign up 4 year olds for a career in accounting….

The Superbrand results are out and it was a close run thing between ACCA and CIMA

The 2010 results of the UK Superbrands research were recently announced.

The annual Superbrands programme recognizes the UK’s strongest business to business brands.

For the last 15 years Superbrands has commissioned independent research to identify what are considered to be the UK’s strongest brands. The annual results are in the words of Superbrand “based on the opinions of marketing experts, business professionals and thousands of British consumers.”

It was a close run thing between ACCA and CIMA with ACCA being identified as being number 304 and CIMA being one ahead at 303. It was virtually a tie between the two institutes so it’s nice to know that they are both considered to be top brands in the UK.

In case you’re interested the top brand in the UK according to the 2010 Superbrands research was Microsoft.

It’s ACCA exam results time so there will be…

It’s ACCA exam results time so there will be some nervous people waiting for an email or the post to arrive. Best of luck to all of you that are waiting for the results.

I’m probably showing my age but when I qualified a fair few years ago the results of the exams were published in the Times newspaper on the Saturday morning when the results were due to arrive by post. The early editions of the newspapers would be available the night before in London so if you lived in London you could get your results on the Friday night before the results were in the paper on the Saturday.

At that time I wasn’t living in London but the Big 4 company I worked for organized some people to pick up some papers in the evening and staff a phone help line where students could call to see if their name was in the paper. After calling and finding out that I had passed I couldn’t resist the temptation to call 10 minutes later to double check!

Before you laugh at me for calling twice, for those of you that will be getting good news in an email then I’m sure that you’ll check the email more than once!
