PESTEL stands for Political, Economic, Sociocultural, Technological, Environmental, and Legal factors. The purpose of a PESTEL analysis is to identify the external factors that may affect an organization’s operations and performance.

Political factors refer to the political environment in which the organization operates, including government policies, political stability, and regulation.

Economic factors include economic growth, exchange rates, and inflation.

Sociocultural factors include societal attitudes, demographics, and cultural values.

Technological factors include the level of technological development and the impact of technology on the organization’s operations.

Environmental factors include environmental regulations, climate change, and natural disasters.

Legal factors include relevant laws and regulations that impact the organization.

Example: The clothing retailer H&M faced significant challenges due to changes in the external environment. PEST is a condensed version of PESTEL.

PEST analysis, on the other hand, includes only Political, Economic, Sociocultural, and Technological factors. It is a narrower framework that focuses on four key external factors.

PESTEL analysis is typically used to inform strategic planning and decision-making by helping an organization identify opportunities and threats in its external environment and develop strategies to respond to them. PEST analysis is used for similar purposes, but it may not be as comprehensive as PESTEL analysis in terms of the factors that are considered.
